Canada Invests in 13 Indigenous-led Clean Energy Projects

Over $40 million from the Low Carbon Economy Indigenous Leadership Fund will go toward a variety of clean energy initiatives, including heat pumps, solar and retrofits.

Canada’s federal government has announced over $40 million in funding to go toward 13 Indigenous-led clean energy projects across Canada.

Capital will be provided through the Low Carbon Economy Indigenous Leadership Fund. The funded projects encompass a variety of clean energy initiatives, from solar panels to more general retrofits and assessments.

Among the project types, heat pump initiatives were the most common. These include $1 million in funding for a new heat pump system at the Thunder Bay Indigenous Friendship Centre in Ontario, $4.3 million to Newfoundland’s Qalipu Mi’kmaq First Nation Band for heat pump installs in private residences.

The funding included three programs to install heat pumps in community-owned homes in B.C.’s Gitlaxt’aamiks Village ($2.8 million) and Newfoundland’s Sheshatshiu Innu First Nation ($1.6 million) and Mushuau Innu First Nation ($5.8 million).
