Energy Sovereignty for Global Stability
November 19-20, 2026
What is the
Decentralised Energy Forum?
The Decentralised Energy Forum (DEF) is Canada’s only annual event dedicated to decentralised energy. The two-day Forum brings together innovators, utilities, project developers, financiers, and industry leaders to accelerate the adoption of decentralised energy through real projects, partnerships, and investment opportunities.
DEF showcases successful innovations that support the transition to a resilient energy future — all within a highly connected environment designed for networking and business development.
2026 Forum Theme
This year’s theme, Energy Sovereignty for Global Stability acknowledges that geopolitical conflicts are often triggered by competition over energy resources. The 2026 Decentralised Energy Forum explores a future in which nations strengthen their energy sovereignty by leveraging their local resources while fostering international trade relationships focused on enabling technologies rather than dependence on imported fuels.
Advances in decentralised energy — including microgrids, solar, geothermal, advanced controls, automation, and cybersecurity — are enabling communities to generate, manage, and secure more of their own energy locally. Unlike imported fuels, these technologies support resilient long-term infrastructure while reducing exposure to geopolitical disruption.
Emerging innovations such as virtual power plants, peer-to-peer energy trading, and Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) are gaining attention for their potential to strengthen energy security while enhancing national security and climate resilience.
DEF2026 will explore how decentralised and diversified energy systems are reshaping global trade relationships, strengthening energy sovereignty, and contributing to greater geopolitical stability.

What People say about DEF
“The Decentralised Energy Forum helped grow our business. We met customers ready to commit to piloting our technology, were connected with great funding that provided us a place to scale up at a college, and learned a great deal from speakers on the future energy landscape. I felt a strong sense of community and built to many meaningful connections. Highly recommend.”
— Keith Cleland, Aqua-Cell Energy
“DEF is a rare event that combined a plethora of great attendees with the intimacy that only a smaller event provides all nestled into a drop dead gorgeous setting. I cannot recommend it highly enough.”
— Sean Murphy, Ping Things Inc.
“What I love about the Decentralised Energy Forum is that it’s not another talk shop. From technology providers to investors, it is where today’s clean energy trailblazers come together, as a community, to discuss latest trends, overcome challenges and showcase lighthouse success stories for scaling.”
— Justin Locke, RMI
"The pitch competition was a pivotal moment for us. It wasn't just a presentation; it was the catalyst that powered our fundraising journey. It provided the spark we needed to ignite our momentum, and just a few months later, we closed our deal – a remarkable achievement in such a short span.”
— Natasha Kostenuk, Ayrton Energy
"Thanks to the engaging discussions and networking, we are teaming up with the Government of Montserrat to explore the potential of co-recovering energy and critical minerals from volcanic geofluids. We have benefitted considerably from conversations at the Decentralised Energy Forum!"
— Jonathan Blundy, Royal Society Research Professor, Oxford University
“The best networking event I attend… every year. Highly interactive. Excellent connections that have led to real business.”
