Aqua-Cell Energy Renewal
Alberta’s Aqua-Cell Energy Wins NorthX Backing for Saltwater Battery
Edmonton’s Aqua-Cell Energy is taking centre stage in a new $1.6 million investment announcement from NorthX Climate Tech, which is accelerating energy storage innovation across Canada.
Aqua-Cell, currently piloting its technology on a microgrid in Victoria, has developed a low-cost, long-duration battery that uses saltwater instead of scarce critical minerals. The solution promises to unlock renewable energy “anytime, anywhere” and could provide Alberta and other jurisdictions with a new tool for grid reliability.
“Today’s announcement is about more than investing in promising technologies and companies,” said Sarah Goodman, President & CEO of NorthX. “It’s about accelerating solutions that will shape British Columbia’s clean energy future.”
NorthX also invested in Vancouver’s FUTURi Power, which is turning EVs and stationary batteries into smart grid assets, and Richmond’s Foreseeson Technology, which is advancing next-generation EV charging.
The funding is part of NorthX’s Call for Energy Storage Innovation with BC Hydro, designed to fast-track commercialization of Canadian solutions that can scale across utilities and jurisdictions.
